LUNA

I CAN’T KEEP STILL. My eyes flick between the Tv and Lucia on the couch. The darling little black-haired angel hasn’t woken once even as I’ve paced around her god knows how many times. Everyone has tried calling me, but Rachel has been answering my phone. I don’t know what to say to myself let alone other people right now. It was obvious in that news report that it was my Chevy. My prized car carrying my husband home to his family that was now a crumpled heap of metal with him no-where in sight. My stomach was in knots and I’d clutched at my phone tightly in my palm waiting for him to ring but I’d yelled and almost threw the damned thing, that’s when Rachel had stepped in and taken it from me. Each and every muscle in my body was locked beyond release and the poor baby in my belly was doing summersaults.

That damned Christmas tree wouldn’t stop winking at me from the corner, the pretty lights I’d loved just hours ago were taunting me, reminding me of the red and blue ones that danced across the tv screen just a few minutes ago.

“If he’s okay, why hasn’t he called yet?” I huff, throwing my arms out from my side.

“It could be anything Luna. He may be giving a report or getting checked out. He’ll call, okay? I promise”

“You can’t promise that” I snap, the hurt that I would have expected to see in her too-green eyes isn’t there.

“Sorry” I glare at the rug on my living room floor and wonder how the hell things can change so damned quickly. This morning, I wasn’t overly worried about my best friend. Sure, I knew something was amiss but for her to blatantly be hiding something from me when her quick mouth was one to normally call me out? Yeah, that wasn’t right. Add that to the fact that my husband may or may not be seriously injured or worse in that damned wreck of a car and yeah, my day had turned out pretty fucking shit.

As I turned to do my millionth round around the kitchen, my eyes landed on Aurora. That damned guitar that meant so fucking much to this family today only served as a reminder of what might have happened to my man.

I couldn’t even imagine living in this house without him let alone without him beside me every damned night. This was the first and last time he was ever allowed to leave me overnight.

“Luna, sit down” Rachel whispers from her spot on the bright yellow chair that suddenly seemed far too cheery for such a moment.

“I’m fine” I bite at the skin around my thumb only to realize that I neither have a nail left to bite nor any skin for that matter. I was sure be gnawing on my own bone if I carried on.

“Why the hell hasn’t he called yet?” I throw my arms out around me at the same time my phone starts to vibrate on the counter.
